Why was Josef K. put on trial? Can any charges against him actually be found in Franz Kafka’s novel? Was the trial that unfolded against him truly— as is commonly believed—completely unfounded, merely exposing the workings of a society where bureaucracy triumphs over empathy?
Every reading of Kafka’s novel, every staging of The Trial, is essentially a reopening of the case against Josef K. The creators of Teatr PAPAHEMA have decided not only to initiate yet another trial but also to launch an investigation—an attempt to reconstruct events and question witnesses in search of evidence and clues. Perhaps this approach will shed new light on the most famous defendant in 20th-century world literature.
The performance is accompanied by an educational program, establishing long-term collaboration with teachers and students from high schools in Białystok.
Recommended for audiences aged 15 and older.
