review:
"This is a highly ambitious production in every respect. It is built upon an outstanding text by Tomasz Kaczorowski (...). I believe that by bringing his own deeply personal vision to the words he wrote, Tomasz Kaczorowski has given them an exceptionally compelling artistic dimension. Much credit is also due to dramaturg Mariusz Babicki, who shaped the rhythm of the piece and heightened the tension.
And to Agnieszka Wielewska, the set designer. The stage is a chessboard of black and white squares—at times evoking the division of the world by skin color, at others reflecting the light and dark sides of human nature. It is as if an endless chess match has been playing out for centuries between Good and Evil, arrogance and fear. The chessboard becomes a battleground between the strong and the weak, the master and the slave, Light and Darkness. It also brings to mind smooth, impassive, cold surfaces upon which we walk.
Above it, suspended between heaven and earth, hang tree trunks on steel cables—stripped of roots and crowns. A symbol of life destroyed by humanity, they eventually collapse into disarray as the performance unfolds. The glass wall is also visually striking—beyond it, as if in an unreal world, events unfold."

"The performance tells a story about us and the world around us, drawing attention to the dangers we create through our reckless pursuit of technology and career success. It speaks of our indifference to what is happening around us. At first glance, this may seem like a simple, oft-repeated theme, but I assure you that Tomasz Kaczorowski’s perspective is remarkably fresh and brutally relevant.
Everyone who sees #ciemność may come away with different conclusions about the issues it explores. Despite their diversity, these reflections will undoubtedly be valid, as the performance does not impose a single interpretation but instead compels us to look into the darker corners of our own selves."

"Very original, minimalist, yet precisely capturing the essence of the message is the visual symbolism used in the staging by Agnieszka Wielewska. The tree trunks hanging from chains create what seems like a forest. Is it the rubber trees from years past or those, also condemned to death in the name of civilization, in the present day?"

You hold a smartphone in your hand. Inside—texts, Facebook, Instagram. It’s hard to imagine life without it.
An average smartphone contains about 16 grams of copper, the largest producer of which is Chile. More and more mines are being built. The batteries contain cobalt, primarily sourced from Congo. More and more mines are being built.
And we want more, more, more smartphones.
Heart of Darkness is closer than you think.
Heart of Darkness is real places on Earth—wherever wars over resources rage, where civil wars erupt, where deposits are exploited at the expense of nature.
The performance #ciemność is an attempt to examine our indifference and responsibility for the modern world.
#ciemność is also an effort to “disenchant” Conrad’s novel, often considered the “shortest” and “dullest” of school readings. The performance is especially recommended for teenagers.
