In the latest issue of the bimonthly Notatnik Teatralny (no. 98–99/2025), dedicated to the theme “Teatr: wizualność”, my interview “MYŚLENIE OŁÓWKIEM” conducted by Katarzyna Waligóra has been published. This is a special issue — the first in the magazine’s history entirely focused on the role of visual artists in theatre.
The editors explore the work of set designers, painters, lighting designers, and multimedia artists. They ask whether contemporary theatre is on the verge of a visual turn. At the center are matter, space, image, and their meaning for theatre today.
In the conversation, I share how I approach scenography from the perspective of a painter. I speak about drawing as a tool for thinking — the pencil that guides me in the creative process and helps me capture space. I talk about how theatre opens me up to people: it teaches cooperation, exchange, and collective work, which is something entirely different from solitary work in the studio.
We also do not avoid difficult topics. We discuss the traps of butaforia — situations in which scenography becomes artificial and overwhelming instead of building truth on stage. I explain what I try to avoid, and where I look for lightness and authenticity.
It is an opportunity to speak not only about my craft but also about the philosophy of my work. About how the interplay of painting and theatre shapes my way of seeing. About how scenography is not decoration, but a way of thinking about the world, about space, and about human relationships.
✦ The full conversation is available in print — I encourage you to read it!
