On July 26, the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola hosted the opening of the group exhibition CITY AND DREAM as part of the 10 x DIFFERENTLY series. The exhibition showcases works by four young artists, graduates of the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts: Joanna Kałdan, Agnieszka Wielewska, Natalia Buchta, and Barbara Iwańska. The curator of the exhibition is Prof. Adam Brincken, a renowned artist, academic teacher, and lecturer.
The CITY AND DREAM exhibition presents an encounter with the unique, diverse, and yet in some ways interconnected artistic expressions of four young female artists. The distinctive feature of their work is a particular sense of distance from the world and people, or perhaps a reflective observation through the lenses of time, memory, space, and detachment. At the same time, the atmosphere of the exhibition is filled with anticipation, anxiety, fear, emotion, and contemplation.
Joanna Kałdan’s painted cityscape features people passing by one another, engrossed in their daily routines. They appear distant, perhaps even lonely, deprived of the chance to meet, converse, or build friendships. Her paintings seem bound by the geometry of form, a self-imposed structure shaped by their own lives.
Agnieszka Wielewska’s cities and people are generally warm, even when the memory of a figure fades away into an immaterial space. The living moments she captures are joyful, representing intimate encounters—you and me, our shared experience of the world and each other.
Natalia Buchta's works feature animals, family photographs, a close presence, and the eruption of nature’s overwhelming power. Vibrant colors and ornamental forms create a playful yet sometimes bitterly grotesque atmosphere. Her work questions whether these fleeting memories will endure or vanish—are they dreams or reality?
Barbara Iwańska’s paintings depict seemingly real yet veiled and elusive stories. Often using herself as the subject, she guides us through an expansive narrative of gardens, overgrowth, moments of ecstasy, and the passage of time.
This exhibition does not make bold statements or engage in contemporary feminist or social revolutions. Instead, it focuses on something entirely different. Through drawings, monotypes, collages, objects, both small and large-scale canvases, and installations, the viewer is left alone with the art, given the space for reflection and contemplation.
